5 Tips for Running in Summer Without Dying in the Attempt
The heat doesn't have to stop your training. These practical tips will help you run safely and enjoy every summer session.

Summer is here, and with it the eternal dilemma: keep training or hide until September? Good news — with a few smart adjustments, you can keep running safely and actually enjoy the warm months.
1. Run Early or Late
The golden rule of summer running: avoid the 12 PM – 5 PM window. Early mornings (before 8 AM) and evenings (after 7 PM) offer cooler temperatures and lower UV exposure.
Use Kibi to find group training sessions scheduled at these hours — running with others in the cool morning air is one of summer's hidden pleasures.
2. Hydrate Before, During, and After
Don't wait until you're thirsty. A good rule of thumb:
- 2 hours before: Drink 500 ml of water
- During the run: Sip every 15–20 minutes (carry a small bottle or plan a route past water fountains)
- After: Rehydrate with water and electrolytes
Signs of Dehydration to Watch For
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Dark-colored urine
- Headache or nausea
- Unusual fatigue
If you experience any of these, stop running immediately and seek shade and water.
3. Choose the Right Gear
Swap your dark, heavy fabrics for:
- Light-colored, moisture-wicking shirts (look for "Dri-FIT" or similar tech fabrics)
- Running cap or visor to shield your face
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Sunscreen (SPF 50+, sweat-resistant) on all exposed skin
4. Adjust Your Pace Expectations
Heat increases your heart rate by 10–20 bpm at the same pace. That means your "easy" pace will feel harder. Be kind to yourself:
- Slow down by 30–60 seconds per kilometer
- Focus on effort, not pace
- Use heart rate zones if you have a running watch
5. Find Shaded Routes
Parks, riverbanks, and tree-lined paths can be 5–10°C cooler than open roads. Explore new routes on Kibi's event map — you might discover a hidden urban trail you never knew existed.
Bonus: Run With Your Community
Summer running is better shared. Join a local running club on Kibi and find training partners who understand the heat struggle. There's nothing like a post-run cold drink with friends who just survived the same 30°C session.
Stay safe, stay hydrated, and keep running. Summer is temporary — your fitness doesn't have to be.
